Over a month ago Steve Jobs announced his resignation from Apple. Today, it is with much sadness that we learn that Steve Jobs has died at the age of 56.
Apple has placed the image at left on their homepage, eulogizing Steve Jobs.
In addition, the company has posted the image and statement below which reads:

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”

The family of Steve Jobs has also issued the following statement:
“Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family. In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.”

A sad day for all influenced and impacted by Steve Jobs.

So, as I’ve been hearing and reading all over the Internet – Steve Jobs has stepped down from his position of CEO of Apple to become ‘Chairman of the board’. Mostly I’d imagine this is what he has been doing unofficially since the start of his third absence due to medical leave, however this is a bold statement which makes it official.

This does feel like the end of a long era, something that’s hung over the head every Apple enthusiast like a bad omen. A moment when those (such as myself) who denied the severity of Steve Jobs’ condition in the hope that one day he would make a triumphant return to action. But no – this I fear, is it.

Steve steps down as CEO and hands the reins over to his replacement Tim Cook. I have warmed to Tim over the course of the last few months, I like the guy, and I think he’s got a lot to offer. But personality, presence (especially on stage) and unbridled passion for Apple – unfortunately, it seems he does not have. Yes, he might be amazing at what he does, I’m not denying this fact – he has been heralded as one of the best in the world regarding supply chain management, but he is not Steve. And he should never apologise for that.

So we step into familiar territory again, Steve sidelined, down and out, but this time – it would seem – definitely. His health I’m sure, playing a massive contributing factor to stopping him from doing what he loves at the pace we would all like to see him to it at, not bed-ridden, gangly in appearance or fragile. But alas, this time as I said before, was bound to come.

Looking forward, Apple is in the best shape it could possibly be with only a bright future to come. The release of iOS5, iCloud, iTunes Music-Match, the iPhone 5, the iPad 3 (next year) and yet more apps literally bumping the app store up to ‘critical-mass-like’ status. Apple is on the ascendance, it’s surging forward day by day, growing ever more popular, pleasurable powerful and profitable.

Yet, I can’t shake the feeling; I just want Steve to run the thing.

Okay, one could argue that, yes – he is going to still play the exact same roll he has done since taking his absence of medical leave, playing a key roll in decisions, strategies and operations. That will not change. However, you got to wonder – how bad is his health now? Considering how he has managed to come this far without need to step down. Maybe this is just the optimum time to do so because of the shape and size and financial growth Apple has been seeing in recent months – was his just ‘the right time’? I’d wager at yes, I think Apple’s ex-leader could have ‘quit’ his position as CEO months ago yet it would have caused too much unrest between ‘analysts’ and investors for it to come into fruition. This is a great time, just as things are getting started, just as the boom is about to happen, the heat would be off him and on the anticipation of the next ‘big thing’.

Yes, Steve has shown here that he has impeccable taste too – when it comes to timing.

In his own words:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Whilst we were lucky enough to get our hands on the apple iPad 2 in the UK a few weeks before it was released here there is still a massive rush for everyone to get their hands on one! They don’t go on sale until 5pm today, so good luck to all the people wanting one.

CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, noted: “We’re experiencing amazing demand for iPad 2 in the US, and customers around the world have told us they can’t wait to get their hands on it. We appreciate everyone’s patience and we are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

And so onto the pricing. It appears Apple is firing on all cylinders here, with the asking price actually being less than the original iPad was when it came out almost a year ago. A clever move when it comes to encouraging new adopters.

The basic original 16GB iPad with wi-fi was £429, and the same iPad 2 model is £399. If you want 32GB of memory, that’ll cost £479, and then £559 for the 64GB model with wi-fi.

Those who want 3G will pay £100 more down the line for the privilege, so pricing will start at £499. A poly smart cover will be £35, and a leather one £59.

Why not take a look at our Gold ipad 2 in the products section.
